    Definition

    What is Unified data model?

A unified data model means different functions operate on the same underlying records rather than on copies kept in step by integrations, so there is nothing to sync and nothing to drift.

A unified data model is the technical foundation of a work OS. Instead of a CRM database, a separate project database, and integrations copying records between them, the functions share one set of records. When a closed deal becomes a project, it is the same record gaining a new role, not a new record created by copying the old one.

The benefit is the removal of sync. Integrations introduce a window where two tools disagree until the next sync runs, plus the standing cost of maintaining the connection. A shared record cannot disagree with itself, so the handoff and integration costs that consolidation targets approach zero for coupled work.

A unified data model matters most for tightly coupled workflows (deal to delivery, document to signature) and less for loosely coupled functions, which can be integrated without much penalty. Atlas puts coupled work on one model and keeps an API and connectors for the rest.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered.

What is a unified data model in software?
It means different functions read and write the same underlying records instead of keeping separate copies in step through integrations. When a deal becomes a project, it is the same record gaining a role rather than a copy, which is why there is nothing to sync and nothing to drift.
Why does a unified data model matter?
Because it removes the sync lag, maintenance burden, and lost trust that come from keeping copies of the same data in agreement across tools. For tightly coupled work, a shared record makes handoff and integration costs approach zero, which is the core economic case for a work OS.
