    Definition

    What is On-device processing?

On-device processing runs a task using local compute in your browser or device, so the file being worked on never leaves your machine, unlike upload-and-process tools.

On-device processing means the work happens where your data already is (in your browser or on your device) rather than by uploading the file to a remote server, processing it there, and sending the result back. The distinction matters most for sensitive files, because the upload model creates a copy on infrastructure you do not control.

Many free online tools, including PDF utilities, use the upload model, which for a signed contract, a payroll export, or a medical record means a copy of a confidential document now lives on a third-party server that may retain, log, or cache it. On-device tools avoid creating that uncontrolled copy in the first place.

Signs a tool is genuinely on-device: it states processing happens in your browser, shows no uploading step, and keeps working after you disconnect your network. Atlas PDF Studio runs its tools on-device, so confidential documents stay on your computer.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered.

    What does on-device processing mean?
It means a task runs using local compute in your browser or on your device, so the file never leaves your machine. This contrasts with the upload-and-process model, where your file is sent to a remote server, worked on there, and returned: creating a copy you do not control.
Why is on-device processing more private?
Because it never creates a third-party copy of your file. Upload-based tools send your document to a server that may retain, log, or cache it, which is a real exposure for confidential or regulated files. On-device processing keeps the document on your own machine throughout.
